Llama / Alpaca hat- Free Crochet Pattern

One of my friends decided to dress up her baby girl as a llama for her first Halloween.  I was given the task of making her daughter a llama hat for her costume.  I couldn't find any free llama hat patterns so I created my own.  This is what I came up with.

Finishing
Sew the eyes, ears, an mouth onto your hat

Hair (optional)
In your accent color cut about one hundred and thirty six,  6 inch strips of yarn. Fold yarn in half and attach 2-3 strands of yarn around each double crochet along the first three rounds of front side of the hat and the first two rounds of the back of the hat.  You may need to add more yarn to the top of the hat so your llama does not have a bald spot.  Once all of the yarn is attached, fray the yarn and give your llama a hair cut.

Braids (optional)
For each ear flap cut eight 32 inch long strips of yarn in the accent color and four 32 inch long strips of yarn in your main color.  Fold yarn in half and attach to the bottom of the ear flap. You should now have a total of 24 strands of yarn.  Divide the yarn into three sections (8 strands each). Braid the yarn to desired length, knot, and trim the ends.

  4. I'm working on this adorable project now but I'm having a bit of trouble following the pattern where it says to *repeat* I'm not 100% sure exactly what part to repeat as the * do not indicate.
Which could be why I'm having trouble with round 4 on the toddler hat, I'm supposed to end up with 44 stitches but I keep ending with 48, the math doesn't seem to work. I must be doing something wrong

  6. Such a cute pattern! My 5th grade granddaughter and her BFF have a "thing" for lama's I guess, my daughter asked me if I could make them a hat and lo and behold I found this free pattern! I used Hobby Lobby I Love This Chunky with a 5.5mm hook to make a quick basic beanie, then used your directions for the face and ears and hair. They are going to love them! Thanks a bunch for a terrific (and did I say FREE?!!) pattern.
